Dear future X: keep your circus.

An ex, their circus and a peace that is no longer up for negotiation.

Official Dear future X cover by Olivia McAether

The title can be misleading. Dear future X is not a romantic letter to somebody who has yet to arrive. The lyrics address an ex, their excuses and a voice that has stopped waiting for another episode. Essentially: the circus may continue, but I am leaving the audience.

I know, “you’re done” sounds excellent when you say it to your friends. In practice, someone often tries to return with a sentence that only looks new because the words have changed places. In this song, that door has already had plenty of use.

Pretty words and recycled apologies

Early in the lyrics, a flattering declaration gets dismantled: being called a muse is not enough if you become somebody’s daily excuse. It is the gap between how someone describes you and the space they actually make for you. A compliment can be lovely. It would be even more interesting with some behaviour attached.

Later, apologies are treated like a promotion: the packaging changes, but the script stays the same. It is a sharply funny image. A request to come back does not automatically become something new because it arrives in a convincing tone. Shops change their offers too; you can still decide you do not need the product.

Silence takes up its own space

The song includes a blocked number, silence and the contrast between someone who keeps talking and someone who moves on. This is not a strategic pause to make the ex chase harder. The voice in the lyrics is directing attention towards herself instead of preparing another explanation.

That is the part that interests me: silence stops being an empty space you must fill. It does not need a smarter, longer or more beautifully formatted message. It can simply remain silence. Remarkable how difficult that feels after spending so long composing replies in your head.

The chorus focuses on who she is now, transformation and taking flight. The person who used to occupy the whole scene gets reduced in scale. The lyrics do not ask the ex to approve this new version. They announce that she already exists. The permissions department is closed.

Peace is not a consolation prize

The circus image returns at the end alongside the choice to keep your peace. There is no need to announce a new relationship or a perfect ending. There is a boundary: what belongs to the ex can stay with the ex. Your calm does not have to go back on the negotiating table whenever a notification arrives.

That is the situation Dear future X describes. The listener brings the rest: you might recognise yourself in a passage, smile at an image or simply turn it up. You do not have to complete a relationship declaration to enjoy a song.
